The Essence of Marilyn Monroe
MARILYN MONROE the name when mentioned brings a beautiful blonde, glamorous, voluptuous curves, sexy girl who doesn’t look to clever would probably be the image that comes to mind.
Marilyn Monroe was not just an ordinary ‘Goddess’ Hollywood created the image as a stereotypical sex bomb and dumb blonde, which captivated the eyes and hearts of many men. Her apparent vulnerability and innocence in combination with her beauty and tragic death has perpetuated a rescue fantasy for many. She dominated the age of movie stars to become, without question the most famous woman of the 20th century.
It is hard to believe that it’s been over 40 years since Marilyn left us. Her legacy includes a library of 29 completed films from a span of only 13 years. However that hardly explains the world’s fascination with her. People who have never seen a single film call themselves fans. Perhaps even more enduring than her films are her photographs. As unpublished images are being discovered all the time to delight of her adoring public. By studying them we hope to establish a personal connection to who Marilyn was and that is what really draws people to her.
Men believe they could have been the soul mate that she never found, while women wonder if they could have been the one true friend that she never had. They all wish they could have been the one to save her, but Marilyn could not be saved. She was tormented by her insecurities that we will never understand.
Without a doubt, her childhood contributed to her insecurity and unhappiness later in life. Although she did exaggerate the horrors of her upbringing, their can be no denying that it was indeed a grim and difficult experience for her. Illegitimate at birth, little Norma Jeane Mortensen even though she was baptised with the surname Baker, entered the world on June 1st 1926. Without a father she was left with the care of her mother, Gladys Baker. Unfortunately this did not last. Gladys, whose family has a history of mental illness, had a break down and was admitted to a mental institution.
Marilyn Monroe was found dead as a result of a drug overdose in her bed in her Brentwood home. On August 4th 1962. She would never regain consciousness. Shortly after she was discovered a bizarre set of activities took place in her home. Some items were removed, including her diary and an incriminating note which could have far reaching implications, if discovered. The order for the removal was believed to have come from some one in the White House, in an attempt to prevent a scandal from toppling the presidency of John F. Kennedy.
Exactly when and how Marilyn died sparked a debate that would last for more than 40 years, and generate many theories, including that of murder. Marilyn herself, the Kennedy’s, the government, J Edgar Hoover, the movie studio, the mafia, her housekeeper, and her doctor have been suggested as suspects.
No matter how Marilyn died and the different theories of her death, this woman was one of the biggest influential people in entertainment. She was a great inspiration in a lot of people’s lives. She was everything but an inspiration. She was a tragic beauty whose presence is still felt today. Her likeness is every where. From dolls to dinnerware, she lives on. Even a new hybrid Rose was given the name, Marilyn Monroe. At last a fitting tribute to our Norma Jeane since she was a delicate flower. Even though her petals have blown away, the seeds she left behind continue to grow in our hearts forever.
